Sea service will be assessed using the National Standard for Commercial Vessels Part D, Crew Competencies.  A copy of this document is available on AMSA’s website  You must them apply to the NT Marine Safety Branch in Darwin (AMSA) who will assess your sea time


Our role at SMIT is to deliver the training and assessment. On successful completion of the course, students will be issued with a Certificate of Attainment from SMIT.

Four units of the twelve core units of the Marine Engine Driver Certificate form the Shipboard Safety Skill Set Course.

Final Assessment

After successful completion of the course at SMIT, and the issue of the Certificate of Attainment, students are required to complete an Application for Certificate of Competency with the Marine Safety Branch NT (AMSA). The final decision on issue of a certificate, restriction or endorsement is made by the National Regulator or the Delegate of the National Regulator. A prerequisite of the final assessment is an AMSA approved Senior First Aid Certificate.
